Lumpy Cards for Cancer Patients: Humor When It’s Least Appropriate

By Alexis Timmons, RN, Founder of Lumpy Cards

When I worked as an oncology nurse at Beverly HillsCancerCenter, administering chemotherapy daily to patients, many of suffering awful side effects, I noticed that the majority did not want sympathy. They wanted to be heard and understood, not pitied. I watched them open countless greeting cards, which said various things like: we are so sorry, get well soon, we are praying for you, and I watched their mood sink a little more. I’m sure they felt appreciated, thought of, but they most certainly didn’t feel better.

It may seem counterintuitive, but a funny greeting card can make a cancer patient’s day brighter than a sympathy card can. As the daughter of a cancer survivor, I know it can be hard to find the right things to say, because you’re as scared as they are. So I took notes on what lifted patients up, and set out to design cards expressing those types of sentiments. I was determined to put a smile on the faces of those afflicted by cancer, and so LumpyCards was born. If you don’t know what to say to your sister, dad, coworker, or best friend with cancer, order a LumpyCard, and it will be easy.

Lumpy Cards 1

Example of a Lumpy Card

I have created greeting cards for every occasion, from birthday cards, sarcastic get-well cards from the cat, to holiday cards, a survivor collection, treatment-day cards, and others all specific to cancer treatment.

Eventually I hope to be in big chain stores like Walgreens and Target, so that my cards will be available to the masses, and cancer patients all over the country can be uplifted. Until then, you can purchase the cards from my website:  www.LumpyCards.com  While my mom was going through her treatment I searched tirelessly for cancer-related cards to make her laugh. I didn’t want a card that beat around the bush either. I wanted a card that spoke directly to the issue —in a funny way. Until now, that just didn’t exist. Now that they’re here, I’m trying to spread the word: Just say “no” to sympathy! Instead, you can order a LumpyCard and make someone’s day.

Another goal of mine is to partner with more cancer research foundations to raise money for their causes. So far I’ve teamed up with Brides Against Breast Cancer as a vendor in their latest Pasadena Fundraiser, and I plan on sponsoring many more, in cancer walks, runs, and events for other organizations. Additionally, a portion of every LumpyCards purchase is contributed to cancer research.

So many cancer survivors have said they wish LumpyCards had been around when they were going through their treatment. It makes me so happy to hear them praise my cards. I feel proud to be making a difference in one of the hardest journeys, knowing that even though I don’t have the cure to cancer, at least I can make the journey a little lighter.

Alexis Timmons, RN

Founder of LumpyCards

“I’ve always been drawn to oncology, as I felt I could make the greatest difference there. I loved the connection I got to make with my patients, and it was so satisfying to support them through something so challenging. But everything changed when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Cancer became personal, and from then on, every patient reminded me of her. I tirelessly searched for ways to brighten her day, and ended up buying lots of blank cards, because most of the cards out there were depressing. I wanted to make her laugh. My goal now is to bring laughter to as many cancer patients as I can. Cancer doesn’t have to be scary all the time! “

COPING WITH NEUROPATHY AND HOW TOPRICIN SUPPORTS THE HEALING JOURNEY

–By Lou Paradise

Patients who are valiantly coping with cancer, supported by the love and assistance of family and friends, have to deal with the significant and often extremely painful side effects of their treatment protocols.

One of the most common and debilitating side effects of chemotherapy is chemo-induced neuropathy:  the excruciatingly intense tingling and burning in the hands and feet can be unbearable.  The nerve pain can be so relentlessly agonizing that is the number one reason that cancer patients prematurely stop their treatments.

I can so appreciate the discomfort, agony, and frustration of what pain sufferers endure because I have personally suffered from debilitating nerve pain.  And as the president and chief of research at Topical BioMedics, Inc., I am humbled by the fact that Topricin—our company’s propriety healing technology uniquely formulated with cellular biomedicines—is helping to support cancer patients on their healing journey, especially with the nerve pain (neuropathy)

I invented Topricin following two tours of active duty serving as a decorated Marine Corps helicopter combat/rescue crew chief in Vietnam.  As a result of the physical demands of my missions, I suffered from cumulative trauma injuries that felt like a severe case of bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).   Because of my nerve-related injuries, I experienced burning pain from the tips of my fingers to my elbows in both hands and arms.  When the pain was at its worst, I was lucky to get two or three hours of sleep, and had to rest sitting up in a chair in order to maintain circulation and offset the excruciating pain.

I was determined to find a cure for my war injuries, as I knew that the chemical pain pills couldn’t help and that the surgery for this condition would not be an option either.  Drawing on my years of research in how the body heals and that natural medicines stimulate healing, I began to self-experiment. Herbal medicines had little effect and single-ingredient homeopathic medicines produced some relief but not what I was looking for.   Not deterred, I deduced that maybe a combination of homeopathic medicines in a cream base applied locally to the specific pain site might be the answer.

I’ve been blessed with a strong intuition and from the 3,000 homeopathic choices was able to use a specific combination of homeopathic biomedicines and created a formula that had a measurable effect and the pain began to ease in just a few weeks. I was able to get four hours of sleep, then five, then six.  This was a wonderful achievement as sleep is crucial to the healing process since the body does its primary repair while we are resting.

I had created the prototype Topricin® formula…And now, more than 25 years later, I am happy to report that I’ve been pain free, symptom free, and medication free, enjoying a complete restoration of full function, mobility, and range of motion.

Topricin is an innovative healing technology that is bridging the gap between well-researched natural medicine and conventional care, and is in fact used at major medical facilities around the country.  My goal in creating Topricin was to make sure no one else would ever have to suffer the way I did. Enhancing the body’s miraculous innate ability to heal itself is the answer to all painful conditions.

Why homeopathy?  Because it is a 200-year-old natural medical model that emphasizes healing as a cornerstone of why it works.  This federally-regulated medical system utilizes micro dosed natural medicines from herb, mineral and animal sources that stimulate the body’s natural healing and defense processes to achieve homeostasis and maximum healing. Healing is the ultimate form of pain relief. This non-chemical, non-toxic form of medicine is safe, produces no known side effects, and is not contra-indicated with any other medication or treatment.

Topricin Products

Collection of Topricin Products

Here’s a bit more detail.  The biomedicines in Topricin are molecular complete natural cellular compounds that are nearly identical to the body’s natural healing chemistries. Topricin has a proprietary delivery system that penetrates to deepest recesses of where we feel the pain. Topricin’s biomedicines stimulate detoxifying the lymphatic system locally, relaxing the microcapillaries to restore oxygen-rich blood to damaged cells. The relief realized is the body’s healing of the cells that cause the pain.

Patented for the topical treatment of pain associated with neuropathy and fibromyalgia, Topricin has helped hundreds of thousands of patients experiencing chemo-induced neuropathy experience the healing relief needed to overcome the side effects of chemo-therapy…reducing or even eliminating the need for oral pain pills. In the case of Rx opioids, the risks are even greater because they are highly addictive, and like all chemical pain pills they have no curative power and literally shut down the healing process, and never treat the cause of the pain. Moreover, the side effects of oral pain medication can lead to worse medical conditions then the pain you were trying to treat.

When it comes to neuropathic pain, especially in the feet and legs, our Topricin Foot Therapy Cream offers maximum benefits.  This is because it’s formulated with additional biomedicines that help reduce excess pressure inside the foot.  It also treats cracking and dry skin and supports circulation, providing needed oxygen and nutrients to repair the cells causing the pain. Apply odorless greaseless Topricin 3-4 times a day initially, for best results before bed and in the morning.

I believe it is everyone’s birthright to experience a vibrant, joyful quality of life, doing the things they love with those they love best.  The Topricin mission is not just about the end of pain; it’s about the beginning of relief.  I am honored to have an opportunity to support your healing journey.

The Breast Cancer Vaccine – Curing Cancer Through Prevention

by Vera Viner

Have you seen breast cancer try to take your life and those around you? Have you feared that your daughter, mother, wife, or sister may be diagnosed with this disease? Wouldn’t you do anything you could to prevent breast cancer from taking the lives of your loved ones?

As luck would have it, there might be something in the works right now that could potentially prevent breast cancer in 95 percent of cases. That’s right, 95 percent! Dr. Vincent Tuohy of the Cleveland Clinic and his team designed a breast cancer vaccine. The vaccine was found to prevent the disease in 100 percent of the mice tested.

Dr. Vincent Tuohy

Dr. Vincent Tuohy

The original research including animal models was published in the Nature Medicine journal in June 2010. Tuohy’s team from the Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute used the compound alpha-lactalbumin as the main property of the breast cancer vaccine. It was found to both prevent tumor formation AND slow down the growth of existing tumors.

Essentially, the study used a control group of mice that were injected with a vaccine without alpha-lactalbumin and an experimental group that was injected with a vaccine containing the relevant compound. All of the mice in the experimental group did not develop breast cancer despite the fact that both groups of mice were genetically predisposed to the disease. The mice in the control group did develop tumors.

“We believe that this vaccine will someday be used to prevent breast cancer in adult women in the same way that vaccines have prevented many childhood diseases,” Dr. Vincent Tuohy stated in a press release. “If it works in humans the way it works in mice, this will be monumental. We could eliminate breast cancer.”

The next steps in this research were clear: find the funding necessary to begin Phase I trials to determine whether the vaccine is safe to use in women. While it was definitely an uphill battle and many common revenue streams for this innovative research declined to help, Dr. Vincent Tuohy was able to gather enough funding to begin the next stage of clinical study at the end of 2013. While the Susan G. Komen Foundation and some other organizations refused funding, there were some smaller grassroots campaigns that helped push forward this research. For instance, Brakes for Breast Cancer, a nonprofit dependent on the proceedings from a handful of auto repair shops, presented Dr. Tuohy with a check for $32,848.84 in February of 2013.

Cleveland Clinic Innovations has created a spin-off company after securing all of the funding called Shield Biotech. The company will continue to improve upon the preventive breast cancer vaccine. Shield Biotech will be finishing preclinical development and seeking FDA permission to begin testing the vaccine as an investigational new drug in human clinical trials.

Phase I clinical trials are expected to begin within the next two years. It will take approximately three years to complete Phase I studies. The Phase IA trial will follow patients with triple-negative breast cancer who have undergone surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation treatment.

During this trial, the researchers will be determining the proper dosage and frequency of the vaccine necessary to ensure the highest immune response for preventing breast cancer development.

Phase IB trials will follow the reactions to the vaccine in healthy women who are at high risk for breast cancer and have chosen to undergo bilateral mastectomy to lower their risk. In this trial, the breast tissue specifically will be studied to determine how the vaccine affects the cancer-free cells.

These initial trials are meant to establish the safety of the vaccine and find the best immune response with regard to dosage. Patients will begin enrollment in the trial starting in 2015.

If you hope to help put a stop to breast cancer and ensure future generations of women do not need to suffer through this disease, please support Dr. Vincent Tuohy’s research on the first preventive breast cancer vaccine.

Salvestrols: An Important Piece in the Cancer Fighting Puzzle – Why You Should Eat Fruits and Vegetables

by Elyn Jacobs, Guest Blogger

Ever wonder why it is that billions have been spent and we still don’t have a viable, established, agreed upon cure for cancer? Very little has changed since 1971, the year the war against cancer began.  We have drugs, lots of drugs. However, this year, more than 1.6 million Americans will receive a diagnosis, and 600,000 will die of the disease and/or its treatment. Why are we still dying from cancer?  We have clearly not addressed the underlying causative factors. As proposed by Thomas Seyfried PhD, cancer is a metabolic disease which is driven by damage to the mitochondria of cells with mutations within the nucleus of the cell playing a role, but not the central role that today drives the conventional development of cancer drugs and the overall approach to the treatment of cancer. The true solution for cancer lies in both the reduction of toxins in our environment and the nutritional and metabolic functions of the body. It is time to change the paradigm.

Cancer is complex, but what if the answer to cancer was as simple as eating your vegetables?  Dr Michael Schachter and Brian Schaefer, author of Salvestrols: Natures Defense Against Cancer, believe that most people suffer from a deficiency of anti-cancer compounds in the diet and this may lead to the development and progression of cancer, and that by correcting these deficiencies we can effectively manage cancer.

~~ “Eat your Vegetables”  Mom, various dates ~~

What if it was that simple, that mere produce could cure or manage our cancer?  Well, I am sorry, but it’s not.  However, it is quite possible that it can play a major role in the prevention and overcoming of cancer.  Turns out, Gerald Potter, an English medicinal chemist, and Professor Dan Burke, a professor of pharmacology and specialist in enzyme metabolism, discovered a molecular level explanation of the link between diet and cancer.

vegetablesPotter and Burke discovered that certain plant derived compounds produce anticancer metabolites as a result of their action with a particular enzyme, known as CYP1B1. They coined a name for these compounds—Salvestrols– being a derivative of the Latin work ‘salvia’, the common herb sage, which means ‘to save’.

When a cell becomes cancerous or precancerous the enzyme CYP1B1 is produced within it. Normal cells have very little or no CYP1B1 within them. When ones diet is rich in organically grown produce that contains Salvestrols the CYP1B1 enzyme will metabolize the Salvestrols to produce metabolites that will cause the cancer cell to die. Human physiology (the CYP1B1 enzyme) plus an organic plant rich diet (Salvestrols) constitutes a natural rescue mechanism to rid the body of cancer cells.

~~Killing Cancer, One Berry at a Time~~

Organic Berries Contain Salvestrols

Organic Berries Contain Salvestrols

Salvestrols are found naturally in organic blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, black currents, figs, tangerine peel and perhaps as many as 50 other fruits and vegetables.   Again, Salvestrols produce anticancer metabolites as a result of their action with CYP1B1. These Salvestrols have the extraordinary ability to recognize cancer cells, embed themselves in them, and destroy them.  The CYP1B1 enzyme is present only in cancer cells, and when it encounters a Salvestrol, it converts it into a form which is toxic to the sick cell and causes that cell to commit suicide (apoptosis).  In other words, when Salvestrols come into contact with the CYP1B1 inside human cancer cells, they become “activated”—and cause the cancer cells to stop growing or die–they basically go on a-seek-and-destroy mission.  Because the enzyme is not present in healthy cells, the Salvestrols have no ill effects on them–unlike cancer therapies such as chemotherapy.

Sounds simple enough, right?  Unfortunately, it’s not.  In order for a plant to create Salvestrols, it must be grown organically. Salvestrols are part of the plant’s immune system. They are produced by plants to protect themselves from pests and disease. However, the use of many modern fungicides and crop protection chemicals means that plants which are not organically grown will not express high concentrations of Salvestrols because they not exposed to the attacks which cause the plant to produce them. Plus, Salvestrols are generally produced late in the ripening phase as this is when the plant is most vulnerable to attack, but produce is typically picked well before ripe.

For the healthy individual without cancer and who eats a significant amount of organic produce, diet is likely sufficient. For those with cancer or who have had cancer, it is virtually impossible (and terribly expensive) and potentially dangerous to eat enough to challenge cancer, so a supplement may well be the answer.  Keep in mind that while fruits are incredibly healthy, they do provide a significant source of sugar (glucose), which is fuel for cancer. Salvestrol activity operates regardless of whether the cell is precancerous, part of a primary tumor or part of the metastases of that primary tumor, so they can be considered as important for prevention as for treatment of full-blown cancers.  Although Salvestrol supplements are available online, it is probably best to take them under the care of a health professional who is familiar with their use to help with the optimal dosage and to help integrate them with a current conventional and/or integrative cancer program and to help with a total program to help prevent and/or treat cancer.  Information about alternative approaches to cancer, including the use of Salvestrols, can be obtained from the Schachter Center website by clicking here, or by contacting the Schachter Center at 845-368-4700 and asking to speak to one of the Schachter Center Counselors.

It is important to note that there are inhibitors and supporters of CYP1B1. Inhibitors include Laetrile (also known as B17 and amygdalin, with bitter apricot kernels being one of the best sources) as well as carbon monoxide (cigarette and likely marihuana smoke), household pesticides and chemicals such as Roundup, as well as the supplement resveratrol (at high doses of more than 40mg or so per day). Yes, resveratrol has some anticancer benefits, but it inhibits the activity of the enzyme, so it must be avoided in supplement form if you are taking Salvestrols.  Supporters of CYP1B1 include magnesium, niacin, biotin, selenium, vitamin C and iron.  (Note:  Biotin is not recommended for those receiving chemo as it will decrease the effectiveness of these drugs and iron supplementation should be under the direction of a doctor; as always consult your doctor before taking any supplements.)

Remember, the key to overcoming cancer is to find the cause and make corrections.  Triggers such as cigarette smoke are well established, but not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer.  It is a breakdown in the body’s ability to manage these insults that results in cancer—deficiencies and imbalances.  So while the trigger for our lung cancer might be smoking or over-exposure to some other toxin, the predisposing cause may well be a weak army, which relates to nutrition and a variety of lifestyle factors. Therefore the best we can do to support the body is to eat well, exercise, take supportive supplements as needed, engage in stress releasing activities, and get plenty of sleep.  Bring on the soldiers.

Cancer requires a comprehensive plan developed by you with the help of your team.  A coach or advocate can help you find the right team, and can be an integral part of that team, but you are in the driver seat when it comes to your anti-cancer plan—you and only you will know what feels right for your cancer, your body.

CureLauncher – Information is Empowerment! – Testimonial

By Barb  Hollingsworth, guest blogger

Over the holidays of 2012, I knew I wasn’t feeling myself but it wasn’t until I had jaundiced two days after Christmas that I knew it was time to do something about it.  Upon arrival at the Emergency Room, I was quickly rushed through to be seen by a Doctor who immediately ordered a CT scan of my abdomen.  Several hours later I heard the words that would instill fear in the toughest of men – that there was a “mass” in my Pancreas.  The next morning I was sent to surgery to have a stent placed in my bile duct and a biopsy of the mass was taken. Two days later it was confirmed that I have Pancreatic Cancer.  The tumor was nearly 5cm in size in the head of my Pancreas and was quite aggressive.  I met with the Oncologist prior to being discharged from the hospital where I was left feeling there was absolutely no hope for a better tomorrow for me.

I have always been a strong woman and after the initial shock and disbelief that I was likely facing the end of my days, that fight in me started to return. I was not convinced that this was the end and I just knew that dying was not an option for me! So I started researching every possible avenue of information about Pancreatic Cancer and Cancer in General.  I reached out to my family and friends on social media where the compassion, love and support I receive is astounding! Through them and the Cancer Center where I started chemotherapy treatments, I kept hearing about Clinical Trials. I had a basic knowledge of clinical trials only and was afraid to deter from a “proven” method of treatment.

I soon realized that information is empowerment and that most “proven” treatment methods used today were developed and recognized because of Clinical Trials. The very chemotherapy regiment I am on was founded just a few short years ago in Clinical Trials. That’s when I knew I had to change my thinking and participate – if not to cure myself, but to help find a cure for future generations.

One day, a very dear friend recommended I contact CureLauncher since my Oncologist had not found any Clinical Trials that I would qualify for. Amy contacted me the very same day I requested information from them and went to work right away to search for a match to a Clinical Trial for me. Within days she had located several options for me. I found out in the mean time that my treatments were working so well that my tumor had gone from “unresectable” to virtually “undetectable” on the CT scans! This meant I no longer qualified for the Clinical Trials and was unable to participate.  I am in remission and looking forward to a long healthy future – and I know that somewhere, some people faced with the same “death sentence” that I was – took part in the Clinical Trials that ultimately led to my own cure! I can’t say enough about CureLauncher.

If you have been diagnosed with any form of cancer, take charge of your future and remember – information is EMPOWERMENT!

Tips to Improve Comfort During Cancer Treatment / How To Combat Cancer Side Effects

By Margot Malin, CEO and Founder of Lots To Live For, Inc.

Starting either chemotherapy or radiation oncology treatment can feel overwhelming. There are logistics and arrangements to consider, medical research and treatment options to review, as well as getting through daily tasks.  Patients often forget to explore how they can reduce cancer treatment side effects.  Reducing unpleasant and uncomfortable side effects is important because the more comfortable you feel during treatment, the more likely you will be to continue through treatments uninterrupted, and the better your overall frame of mind will be.  We will give you an overview of some simple ways you can combat the side effects of cancer treatment.

Lots to Live For, Inc.  offers a variety of products to help you reduce and relieve side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.  Many of the products have been developed by cancer survivors and thrivers who saw an unmet need when they went through treatment and decided to “pay it forward” by developing a solution. Many of these products are manufactured by small, innovative and entrepreneurial companies without a “national marketing machine” so they may not have recognizable brand names.

Radiation Skin Care

Radiation can cause many different skin reactions – including but not limited to dryness, redness, tenderness, burns, radiation reaction and radiation dermatitis. Some lotions and creams can be very effective at reducing these side effects. Highly effective brands include RADX radiation therapy, My Girls Skin Care (all natural) and 7 Cream (homeopathic). Gel sheets and pads such as CoolMagic hydro gel sheets or the Lind Skin Cooler Roll can be cooling and soothing, and can be applied directly, or over a radiation cream, providing intense relief. Explore products to help heal and soothe radiation burns at Lots To Live For, Inc.

Oral Care

It is a good idea to have your teeth cleaned, or other dental work performed before starting chemotherapy or radiation to your chest and neck area. Many medications will affect your mouth.  Use a gentle toothpaste, such as Biotene, and keep your mouth fresh and lubricated with gentle products such as Biotene or MouthKote Oral Balance can help to soothe mouth sores and enhance hydration.

Hair Care

Many chemotherapy medications can cause hair to fall out, and they can also make the scalp feel itchy and tingly. Explore the newly introduced Penguin Cold Cap to help hair retention during chemotherapy treatment. Thymuskin hair care topical products can help reduce hair loss and accelerate hair regrowth.  Alra shampoo and DermaQOL hair products can help ease an itchy scalp.

Nausea

Ginger is a natural product that can help nausea.  Biobands are acupressure wristbands that can also help.  Try Queasy Pops and Queasy Drops for added comfort.

Cancer Gifts

All of the products mentioned also make excellent gifts for cancer patients. If you are a friend, relative, caregiver, or co-worker consider a “gift of comfort” as an expression of your concern and support. Click here to find a collection of cancer gifts.

gift_of_comfort

Beyond personal care products that can help maintain comfort during cancer treatment we also share additional lifestyle suggestions.

Nutrition

There is a wealth of information dedicated to healthy eating during cancer treatment. One suggestion is: The American Cancer Society Complete Guide To Nutrition for Cancer Survivors.   There are many articles about superfoods, and the importance of reducing sugar in the diet. Remember to stay well hydrated! We suggest searching the internet for additional information.   The Anti-Cancer Club provides additional suggestions about nutrition.

Exercise

Research is increasingly proving that gentle exercise has many benefits. Physical activity can decrease depression and anxiety. Additional benefits from exercise may include the reduction of stress, increased confidence and reinforcement of other positive health habits. Exercise can also help the patient gain endurance, increase energy level and decrease fatigue, which may be caused by treatments. Studies have recently shown that exercise may in fact help prevent reoccurrence.

Items to Take to Treatment
