Affirmations for Healing from Eve St. John

This post is an interview between Margot Malin, Founder of Lots To Live For, Inc. and Eve St. John, discussing her journey back to health using affirmations and crystals.

What was the inspiration for launching Eve St. John, LLC?

I have been in the field of fitness for the past 20 years.  My passion has always been to inspire, motivate and ignite your spirit through my yoga and fitness classes, workshops, and uplifting community events.  I love empowering my students, my friends, my family, my kids, my neighbors, my customers and everyone to always believe in themselves, that there is nothing they can’t do or achieve.  Four years ago, I had a freak accident where I got hit on the head with a flying hockey puck at my son’s game.  It was a serious injury but, I was so blessed and lucky because I am here to tell you the story.  After severe head hematoma and not being able to resume my normal life activity or work, I started meditating seriously and counting my blessings daily more than ever before.

What were some of the affirmations that you meditated on?

I started to meditate to gratitude daily. Counting every blessing, my breath, that I woke up, that I walked, that I could get dressed, that I was able to think, that I had my family who cared, and so much love from so many.  Repeating the words, I am love, I am peace, I am strong, I am healthy, I am grateful, I am amazing, I am beautiful and I am evolving.  I repeated these words even though at the time, I had hard time believing the words I was saying and with my face was so physically distorted I looked anything but beautiful, however I knew I was beautiful inside and nothing was going to take that away from me.

What are simple affirmations that you can offer to help cancer patients through their journey?

Gratitude and Affirmations

Gratitude and Affirmations

Any of these affirmations would be a good positive way to empower you and start your day…. I am strong, I am healthy, My body heals very quickly, I am a miracle, I heal my body with every breath that I take, I love (whatever type of ailment, for example if its breast) say I love my breasts, and I appreciate my body…..I believe sending love to the body part that has needs love is important part of healing. I am getting better each day, I am determined to help others with my story, with my miracle and healing, affirmation can be your personal goal of what you want stating it in a positive way as it has already happened, thanking it.

How did you incorporate gratitude into your healing?

I incorporated gratitude into my healing by daily meditation, keeping a journal, listing things that I was grateful for, on some days, just writing that I can write in this journal, that my fingers, and brain were functioning, I was grateful to be alive, grateful to be able to eat, see, hear.  I believe meditation of daily gratitude is very powerful and empowering, whether you do it in the morning or at night, I did it every time I felt I was worried, scared, or in pain.  When you can stay grateful in your most challenging days by counting your blessings, your light will always take over the darkness.  Gratitude opens the doors to more blessings and healing.  Since you can’t think of two thoughts at the same time, you can’t ever be sad, depressed, worried or stressed with your problems as you are counting your blessings at that moment, so you distract the mind from being in a negative place.

During recovery, why did you study crystals and what did you learn?

I was so intrigued by the following: how I can heal faster, how I can be a miracle, how I can help others through my challenging times, how I can be stronger, and how I can resume my normal life asap.  I started searching how to bring more energy to me, my home, etc…..I discovered the power of colors, organization of your home,  power of crystal and gem beads, and how each carry different energy associated with them.  I was fascinated.  I learned that I can enhance the energy that I bring to me through the power of colors, and crystals, and gems, I wanted to make a bracelet with clear crystal quartz to help me heal faster.

Are there any crystals that you would recommend to cancer patients?

Often people ask me this question, which crystal or gem bracelet they should get for their loved ones or for themselves?  It’s so strange but most of the time, one craves the energy and the color of the crystal beads, or gems that that they need in their life, and often when they read the story that is associated with the bracelet of their choice they realize they find the perfect right one.  It’s a very personal choice, but personally I would recommend clear crystal quartz or any gems with healing, empowering properties.

Which are your most popular products?

All my designs are popular and empowering, due to their story, people shop according to their wish, from meditation kits, to large crystal bracelets, to petite crystal beads, or the gem and gratitude collection.  Some love wearing the “empowering” tank top from my shirt collection to be their reminder that the universe is at their command and that they are limitless, some love wearing the “I am” tank top, knowing that they are everything that they set their mind to.  People who love to meditate love the gratitude line of items.  Younger people love the petite crystals, and then there are many that love wearing all the colors and love stacking all the bracelets as their reminders of empowerment, strength, beauty, perseverance and love.

Tell us a bit about the crystal bracelets and the cards that go with them?

Eve St John crystal bracelets

Crystal bracelets

I made my first bracelet for myself while I was healing from my head accident.  Then when I went back to my regular job of teaching yoga classes, all my students were so drawn to them and they all started asking me to make them one.  The demand grew bigger and bigger, where now I am proud to be able to employ local moms, college students, to help me grow my business and helping me making them to meet the demand, as I help support all local stores in NJ.

Each crystal bracelet comes with an appropriate story and the energy it carries that I write about each one, along with explanation of the meaning of the crystal beads and gems, a wish card as well as the affirmation words that I had used in my darkest days to get me through my difficult times.  I am so grateful to be able to help inspire and empower through my designs.  Each day I send a special mediation and a prayer which is my, gratitude to every person wearing these what I believe are magical bracelets, as well as everyone else to make you feel on top of the world.  I know these bracelets have brought so much love, healing, strength, peace and joy to me that there is nothing I love more than making them for everyone.

Where can readers find your bracelets?

They can find at their local stores in Bergen County, NJ including: Hallmark at Woodcliff Lake NJ, The Zen Shop Riverside Square Mall, Tess Morgan Paramus Mall, All is Well in Wyckoff, The Market House in Westwood NJ, Cose Belle in Franklin Lakes NJ.   If any of the readers would like to order one on line at evestjohn.com there is a special coupon offer that is valid until April 1,2017 that will give 20% off every order no matter how many times the purchase.

Use coupon code  HEALTHYFOREVER to get 20% off all online orders (code valid through 4/1/17).

All designs can be found on our website www.evestjohn.com

You are amazing and one of a kind.  It’s nice to have a reminder of who we are and have designed all my pieces with you in mind.  We all need a reminder! No matter who we are.  Shop according to the energy you like.

Eve St. John

Eve St. John

How are you doing now? Is your face healed?

I am very blessed and yes my face is back to normal, although I have an indentation on my forehead, it’s hardly noticeable and I am so grateful for that because that is my reminder of how lucky, blessed I was and I am, that I am here to tell you my story.

I am so grateful to all of you for allowing me to spread more love and light to your life.  Eve St. John

ComfortSlings (R) and Pads for Radiation Therapy

ComfortSlings and inserts are designed to bring relief to painful and uncomfortable skin under the breast. The cushions prevent chafing, wick away perspiration and help prevent bacterial growth.  The Comfort Single Sling, designed especially for women receiving radiation for breast cancer, is worn when one is not wearing a bra. The strap is completely adjustable and will fit most everyone. Women have found that wearing a ComfortSling from the onset of radiation therapy, even before any side effects have begun to appear, is the most effective way to minimize uncomfortable side effects to the skin. Wearing the sling as many hours as possible throughout the day, will provide the most comfortable results. Many women also choose to wear the sling while sleeping.

We always welcome inquiries from entrepreneurs who have developed products that will help cancer patients.

We also welcome customer feedback.

Best wishes for health and happiness in the year ahead.

Improve Comfort Beneath the Breast During Radiation Therapy with a ComfortSling®

By Elizabeth Silver

My personal journey began when I was faced with radiotherapy following a lumpectomy for breast cancer.  I created a cushioned sling to minimize the burning side effects on the skin beneath my breast. It was remarkably effective.  I realize that skin types vary, but other than my skin becoming slightly darkened, I had virtually no other side effects. No burns, no chafing.  The wicking fabric prevented accumulation of perspiration and the soft cushions protected my skin from the abrasion of skin to skin contact.  With the support of my doctors, I tested this device with several other women undergoing radiation, and they too reported significantly minimized and/or delayed skin reactions.

comfort sling cross body 1

Encouraged by this success, I determined to develop the products further to bring them to market so more women could find relief and protection while undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.  We found the softest fabrics to provide the most effective cushion to cradle and protect the skin; we found equally soft straps and made them fully adjustable so there would be no undue pressure on sore areas beneath the breast.  We are very proud of the results.

Our product was launched in the fall of 2014, and the feedback we have received has exceeded our expectations with women reporting to us that “The sling saved the day.” and   “I found instant relief where I didn’t even realize that I needed it”.

Exciting news!   BreastComfort is delighted to announce that we have begun 2016 with a new partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation –the highest-rated breast cancer charity in the nation.  We are proud to donate 5% of every sale to the BRCF. The BreastComfort logo will be featured on BCRF’s  website at:  www.bcrfcure.org/partners.  It is deeply gratifying to be associated with such an outstanding organization in the fight against this terrible disease.

I Am Furious: Learn From My Cancer Story About Why You Must Become Your Own Medical Advocate

By Pat Wetzel, Founder of the Anti-Cancer Club

Cancer has so many stages, and not just the medical ones.  I’ve been through three rounds of chemo, got a great remission and I’m simply exhausted.  But as I learned, you can never relax. You must step up and be CEO of your own health, not just during treatment, but for the indefinite future.

I’m a reasonably astute medical consumer, or so I thought. I understood all the drugs I took; I understand my disease; I understand the profound impact of lifestyle choices and I make wise ones.  I was even married to a surgeon for 13 years so I have no illusions about the medical establishment.

But beyond recovery, you now have a new task: Following up on all those drugs and radiation that were pumped into your system. Pat Wetzel I am Furious

Your doctor may or may not warn you about the after effects of cancer treatments.  Livestrong and the University of Pennsylvania have put together an excellent tool to help.  This web based app allows you to enter your treatment history and see the most likely long term side effects to watch for. I advise everyone to try this, and to take the results to your next doctor’s visit.  Force the issue of survivorship care, because most likely, it’s not on your doctor’s 5 minute agenda.

Click HERE to access the Livestrong (Survivorship) Care Plan Powered by PennMedicine’s OncoLink.

My story highlights the need to take charge, long after treatment is done. Please share this with others, to help get word out and to hopefully spare someone else my experience.

I’ve been having trouble with my leg for over a year. I presumed it was a tennis injury that just wasn’t healing, so I finally broke down and got some x-rays.

My bones have decayed. Alkylating agents. So I googled the topic and found:

“Therapy of lymphoma with high-dose glucocorticoids and alkylating agents may result in premature bone loss, increasing the risk of vertebral and hip fractures.  In patients at least 50 years of age, 54% of men and 40% of women had baseline osteopenia.”

I am furious.

I’ve been through 2 major rounds of chemo involving Cyclophosphamide and Bendamustine, both of which are alkylating agents. I had NO idea that they might impact my bone density. The FDA warnings have no info. My doctor said nothing. Even after he saw me limping, almost unable to walk, my oncologist didn’t make the connection between the drugs and my bones. Bones aren’t his specialty. Bone docs don’t talk to cancer docs.

I am furious.

Cancer is hard enough. We bone up on the medical treatments (no pun intended);  muster our courage to pour poison into our veins; persevere through sometimes horrendous and even life threatening side effects. But it’s never over. Cancer is the gift that just keeps on giving.

The cancer community desperately needs survivorship care. But when will it be a reality? How do you get information to trickle down to the local provider? How do you install the notion of a totally new type of care into a rigid and inflexible system that is physican-centric not patient-centric?

Einstein once said that you can’t fix a problem with the same energy that caused it. How can we expect physicians who didn’t even believe in chemo brain much less other side effects to provide survivorship care?

I am furious.

Had I known, could I have done something? Some studies are using (still more) drugs (most likely with side effects of their own) to combat the bone loss. Perhaps I could have done more weight bearing exercises. Would that have helped? I’ve been active in sports my entire life. Now what? Am I to lose this too?

No one told me that there was yet another phase to this ongoing nightmare named cancer, where I had to take charge, be brave, figure it all out for myself yet again. I’ve worked through the treatments. I’ve worked to figure out the diet piece. I’ve worked to dramatically change my reaction to stress via daily meditation (I was even more upset before I meditated this afternoon!) I took charge of everything I could because when it comes to cancer, there is no one to figure it out for you. You are on your own.

I am furious.

Cancer takes so much away. We can lose our financial stability that it took years to build; some of us lose our homes, some of us lose our livelihoods. Friendships are strained when no one knows how to relate, and they fall away. This is just the last straw. Losing my mobility has been hard enough, but to find that it may be impacting my skeletal structure is too much.

And the worst part? I can’t get a hip replacement until I can move back into my house. I can’t move into my house because my insurance company, Allied which is a subsidiary of Nationwide (who is NOT on my side) has been stalling for over FIVE MONTHs on paying a claim for water damage that occurred in AUGUST while I was out of town. As a result, I’m living in a rental with little or no furniture in most rooms and a staircase that makes getting up and downstairs an overwhelming experience in total hip pain.

I am furious.

I guess I want to believe that since I toughed it out like such a trooper, I could look forward to a period of life again. I feel betrayed. Perhaps that’s unfair. I would have made the same decision to go ahead with treatment, but I wish I had JUST KNOWN about the long term implications. I just wish I had a clue what issues are related to survivorship and the various drug combinations I’ve had. If I’d been more informed, I could have been more alert to possible problems.

Why in the world does no one address these issues? For me it’s too late; I hope that for someone else reading this it won’t be. Add survivorship follow up care to the lengthy list of things you already have to take charge of. Because when it comes to cancer and health care, you are on your own.

Pat Wetzel, founder of Anti-Cancer Club

Pat Wetzel is the founder of the Anti-Cancer Club.   In 2009, she was diagnosed with a rare lymphoma.  She closed down the investment fund in which she was a partner and focused on dealing with her cancer.

Cancer, she realized, is characterized by a loss of control as medical tests, treatments and protocols take over one’s life.

How does one take control of one’s health, even in the face of cancer?  What are the factors of health in the context of cancer?

Critical research by Dean Ornish, MD, David Servan-Schreiber, MD, Jeanne WallacePhD, CNC, and others all pointed to 4 key factors over which you do have control: Nutrition, Exercise, Stress Management and Connection with Other People.

Pat created the Anti-Cancer Club to shorten the learning curve for others and provide quality, actionable information for crafting a sustainable, anti-cancer lifestyle, one step at a time.  Click HERE for the Anti-Cancer Club website.

Please note the following – The Livestrong Care Plan referenced herein is intended for survivors of adult cancers. The Children’s Oncology Group website, Cure Search, is a wonderful resource for survivors of childhood cancers. In addition, childhood cancer survivors should encourage their healthcare team to review the extensive guidelines for long-term care developed by the Children’s Oncology Group.

Great Holiday Gifts for Cancer Patients

Are you looking to purchase a great holiday gift for a cancer patient? To give a gift that will be special and highly appreciated, we suggest buying a gift that is both thoughtful and useful.

Cancer treatments including most chemotherapy regimens and radiation can cause unpleasant and uncomfortable side effects. Great gifts can help reduce the severity of these side effects and help to improve the patient’s quality of life.  Even simple side effect solutions can have a big effect on quality of life.

Deluxe Chemo Gift Kit

Deluxe Chemotherapy Gift

We have created a list of possible side effects and product suggestions to help combat the uncomfortable symptoms. Giving a gift of comfort shows that you understand and empathize with the patients’ health challenges.

Click on any product name below for more information and details about the product.

NAUSEA

We recommend Queasy Drops which are helpful in three ways: 1) they help to reduce nausea and 2) they help keep a dry mouth hydrated 3) they have a pleasant taste. These make a great stocking stuffer.

Biobands are simple acupressure wrist bands which can be worn round the clock with no side effects. They also help reduce nausea, and are reasonably priced.

RADIATION SKIN CARE

For compromised skin including radiation reaction and radiation dermatitis, we suggest My Girls Skin Care Cream, which is calendula based and calming. It goes on the skin feeling creamy but not oily.

For burned and painful skin we recommend RADX Radiation Therapy which also has 2% lidocaine as an ingredient to help reduce pain.  CoolMagic gel sheets also offer incredible relief.

A personal products gift collection with excellent value is the DermaQOL 9 Piece Gift Kit which includes soap, lotions, therapy cream, shampoo, conditioner, lip balm, and more. The DermaQOL products contain no harsh ingredients (ie no parabens, or other harsh products).

For a calming spray, we suggest CV Skinlabs Rescue & Relief Spray or Atopalm Moisture Mist.

To help surgical scars heal consider CV Skinlabs Restorative Skin Balm.

DRY MOUTH

Many chemotherapy regimens, and radiation to the throat and neck often cause dry mouth.  MouthKote is a handy spray that can be carried in a purse or a briefcase to combat dry mouth. We suggest Oral Balance Gel to help with mouth sores.

CLOTHING

Interesting and creative head wraps or hats may be appreciated by patients experiencing hair loss. There are also special surgical gowns that have been designed for cancer patients with special closures and port holes.  You can read about Radiant Wraps by clicking here.

STRESS

Relaxation, meditation and breathing products can help reduce stress. We suggest the Breathe with Purpose CD.  There are also calming apps which can be downloaded onto your phone. These products can help the patient relax during chemo infusions, or help improve sleep.

THE UNKNOWN

Fear of the unknown can cause escalation and rumination which can increase stress. The book “When Cancer Hits” by Britta Aragon is a complete guide to navigating all the changes that a patient will experience between the doctor’s office and everyday living including how to best manage side effects, stress and home recovery, and how to sustain positive energy during treatment and beyond.

LACK OF EXERCISE

Gentle exercise is generally recommended for cancer patients. Carol Michaels has written a book called  “Exercises for Cancer Survivors” and also has two gentle exercise DVD’s which can be done in the comfort of your own home. Some cancer patients are under the impression that inactivity will decrease fatigue and speed recovery. However, exercising during and after cancer surgery and treatments is helpful for one’s physical and mental well-being. The book and DVD’s are valuable resources and can help guide patients.

POOR APPETITE

Chemotherapy can affect appetite and taste. While many well wishers think that sweets and candy will be appreciated, many oncologists recommend that sugary products should be avoided. Therefore if considering food, we suggest homemade broths and chicken soups, or organic fruit and vegetable gift baskets.
