Gale’s Story of Hope, Help and the Genesis of the Renewing You ®Cancer Gift Bag

By Gale Donovan, survivor, Founder and President of Renewing ® You

My purpose and creation of the Renewing You® Skincare Gift Bag is to provide women with uplifting and useful products while undergoing radiation treatment. My oncology nurse gave me a list of skincare products to purchase to help relieve the common side effects associated with my treatment.  I found the products to work well but was disappointed with the packaging.  These items were aloe vera gel, cornstarch, mild soap, and a soft baby washcloth.  Just think about carrying around a box of cornstarch in your purse. As a former Esthetician I had access to new products and their application.   I instantly thought of a powder sifter jar to put the pure cornstarch and a soft powder puff to apply.  I realized how easy it was to apply the corn starch to a lining of a wig to help with absorbing moisture and also to use as an alternative to deodorant.

I was faced with a tube of aloe vera gel.  The dispensing of it was messy and when going in a public restroom and not having paper towels only a hand dryer available.  I saw a bottle that I could dispense the aloe from the top with three holes on top and it was packaged in no mess applicator, keeping my hands clean.  Also, I could take the aloe vera gel bottle in my purse.

When I looked for a low lathering soap it was difficult to find one with pure ingredients with no chemical preservatives.  I customized my soap to a 7 ingredient glycerin soap, it was low lather, no fragrance, and non- irritating.  I recall using a soft baby washcloth with my twins and decided to try one to help exfoliate the sensitive areas.  It worked beautifully.

My gratitude pad is a great way for women to ask for help. My friends would always ask, “What can I do?”  As a wife, mother, and esthetician I was an independent woman doing well balancing all three. I did see the importance of having a meal made or a friend to pick up my twins from football practice.  This sticky note does that and my friends loved having a note as a gentle reminder. A gratutude pad is enclosed in the gift so all the patient has to do is fill out a helpful chore that he/she would like help with, and hand the reminder to a friend or relative.

My oncology nurse was happy to see how I was healing so quickly and she praised me for all my creative ideas.  My Renewing You® Skincare Relief Gift Bag has put so many smiles on women’s faces, each bag contains, an affirmation card, a postcard of my story, a bottle of organic aloe vera gel, a pure glycerin soap, a soft baby washcloth, pure corn starch, and a gratitude pad.  I have put my heart into searching out the purest ingredients in the most convenient packaging that can be taken anywhere on the go.

My hope for cancer patients is that Renewing You® skincare products will:

Make The Journey A Little Easier, A Day At A Time.

Of Mice and Women: Investigating the Breast Cancer Virus

By Vera Gruessner

Dr. Kathleen Ruddy

Dr. Kathleen Ruddy

Have you heard about the breast cancer virus in mice? There is significant evidence that this virus is linked to human breast cancers. Dr. Kathleen T. Ruddy, a New Jersey-based breast cancer surgeon and Founder of the Breast Health and Healing Foundation, released her executive summary about her soon-to-be-published book “Of Mice and Women:  Unraveling the Mystery of the Breast Cancer Virus.” By June 2015, the book will be published and available in both print and digital formats. To learn more about the upcoming book, you can read the executive summary on the Breast Health and Healing website by clicking here.

In your free time, take a minute to download the executive summary (which is completely free) and share on your social networks! Let your close ones know about the innovative and intriguing book. Over the last eight years, Dr. Kathleen Ruddy wrote and revised this book and is now ready to finish publishing it in paper and electronic formats. Want to know the best part of it all? The digital version will be free to the public at large!

Of Mice and Women

Of Mice and Women (new book)

Did you know that 40 percent of human breast cancers have gene sequences that are analogous to a retrovirus known to cause breast cancer in mice? The retrovirus found in mice is called the mouse mammary tumor virus. Further research on the breast cancer virus is necessary to determine strategies that would prevent this serious medical condition. The researchers Drs. Pogo, Etkind, and Melena have spent decades studying the Pink Virus and its role in human breast cancer.

If we can prove that a virus causes up to 40 percent of human breast cancers, the scientific community can work toward creating a vaccine that would prevent this disease in men and women around the world. This would be an amazing opportunity to eradicate the disease once and for all!

Does the human mammary tumor virus cause breast cancer in women? If so, we need to develop vaccines that can prevent the disease.

Any and all donations that the Breast Health and Healing Foundation gains from the release of the executive summary and the book will be put toward funding the full-length documentary film, “A Pox On Us,” co-produced with Soap Box Media. The profits from the film will be used to directly fund research on the breast cancer virus.

We hope the executive summary and the book will spread like wildfire through the breast cancer community. To achieve this goal, we need your help! Please share it on Facebook. Share it on Twitter. Share it on Google+. Share it on LinkedIn. Let your friends and family know about this revolutionary work!

Books for Cancer Patients: Inspiration, Meditation and Exercise

by Margot Malin

We got such positive feedback from our prior blog post, in which we highlighted books that are helpful for cancer patients who were just diagnosed, going through treatment and seeking to improve their diets that we were inspired to create an update. Click HERE to access our original post “Helpful Books for Cancer Patients – Just Diagnosed, Going Through Treatment and Nutrition and Diet Suggestions“.

In today’s blog post we suggest books for exercise during and after cancer treatment and books to help inspiration, calming and healing.  These books can empower the reader with knowledge and inspiration.

EXERCISE

Exercises for Cancer Survivors – Stretching and Strength Training, By Carol Michaels

According to Carol Michaels, MBA, ACSM, ACE:  “Exercise is an important component of a cancer survivor’s recovery process. Emerging research suggests a decrease in breast cancer recurrence for those who exercise. A well-designed program can also decrease side effects and improve quality of life. Moreover, acceptance of exercise as part of a good recuperation and standard of care has been gaining momentum in the medical community.  Cancer patients should begin an exercise program designed to ameliorate the adverse effects of surgery and help them regain their pre-cancer fitness level. Exercise that focuses on functional fitness will help them be able to perform the activities of daily living and return to the activities that they enjoy.”

This book educates patients about the importance of exercise in their treatment regimen. A more complete description of her book is available in this blog post: “Exercises for Cancer  Survivors – A New Book”.  Among other things, in this book patients will learn: Which exercises should I be doing and which should I avoid? Can I exercise during chemotherapy? Can I exercise if I have lymphedema? How do I exercise safely with osteoporosis? Some cancer patients will need to exercise under supervision while others will be able to exercise independently. This book isan essential guide for those who prefer or need to exercise independently.  Click HERE for more information.

YOGA

This is an unique restorative yoga therapy book which focuses on breast health, lymphedema management and breast cancer recovery. The breath is also introduced with each flowing pose so that the mind as well as the muscles “let go” and relax allowing for the healing to begin and then to grow. Yoga poses are done either in a relaxed, reclined, seated, twisting and standing position. Restorative Yoga For Breast Cancer Recovery is a great beginning to build a practice for strength and flexibility, as well as aiding in lymphedema management. This book outlines a variety of easy to learn restorative yoga poses which can emotionally and physically improve the recovery process from breast cancer surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy treatments. It is also invaluable in maintaining breast health, reducing cancer related fatigue (CRF), and managing lymphedema. Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds by Dr. Kelly Turner

While getting her Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkley, Dr. Turner, a researcher, lecturer, and counselor in integrative oncology, was shocked to discover that no one was studying episodes of radical (or unexpected) remission—when people recover against all odds without the help of conventional medicine, or after conventional medicine has failed.  She was so fascinated by this kind of remission that she embarked on a ten month trip around the world, traveling to ten different countries to interview fifty holistic healers and twenty radical remission cancer survivors about their healing practices and techniques. Her research continued by interviewing over 100 Radical Remission survivors and studying over 1000 of these cases.  Her evidence presents nine common themes that she believes may help even terminal patients turn their lives around.

Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds has been highly recommended by numerous integrative medicine practitioners, cancer patients, cancer coaches  on blogs and on Linkedin posts.  Click HERE for more information.

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and Jeff Zaslow

A lot of professors give talks titled “The Last Lecture.” Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can’t help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn’t have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave–“Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”–wasn’t about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because “time is all you have…and you may find one day that you have less than you think”). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.  For more information about this book click HERE.  To view The Last Lecture “Randy Pausch:  Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” on YouTube click HERE.

From Incurable to Incredible, Cancer Survivors Who Beat The Odds and Miracle Survivors: Beating The Odds of Incurable Cancer, both books by Tami Bohemer

From Incurable to Incredible features 27 stories of cancer survivors who shocked everyone by overcoming a terminal prognosis. You’ll learn about Dave Massey, who in 1986 and again in 1997, was given six months to live. Today, he runs marathons and speaks at cancer centers nationwide to spread his message of hope. Paul Falk, diagnosed 23 years ago at age 9 with acute leukemia, describes how his doctors wondered if he would survive two weeks. A year later, he wowed everyone by becoming the personal guest of then Vice President George H.W. Bush. And then there’s Mary Jacobson who, after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, bought a coffin and made arrangements for her young daughter. Fifteen years later, she competes in Strong Woman competitions and pulls planes, trains and automobiles for charity.

If you have received an incurable cancer diagnosis, hearing about someone “who made it” is like spotting a rescue ship when you’re drowning in a stormy sea. Miracle Survivors provides that lifeline with a collection of stories of cancer survivors who were given a terminal diagnosis but shocked everyone by thriving years past their prognoses. These “miracle survivors” have different cancers and circumstances, but share a poor prognosis and incredible drive to overcome it.

Miracle Survivors will help answer the question: What sets people apart who beat the odds of a terminal or incurable prognosis? Overcoming the odds wasn’t something that just happened to those who share their stories. Each person took a very active role in overcoming their challenges, whether it was activating their faith or transforming their lifestyle. Rather than passively accepting their circumstances, they decided to transform them.

Waking the Warrior Goddess, Third Edition: Dr. Christine Horner’s Program to Protect Against & Fight Breast Cancer,  by Christine Horner, MD

Breast cancer has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Once a relatively rare disease, it now affects 2 to 3 million American women. What can we do to protect ourselves? Christine Horner, M.D., has the prescription: Eat healthy foods, add a good dose of certain supplements, get the rest and exercise we need, and avoid things that are bad for our bodies. We each have a Warrior Goddess in us, and it’s time to set her free.

A pioneer who pushed through federal and state legislation ensuring that breast reconstruction after a mastectomy would be paid for by insurance companies, Dr. Horner lost her own mother to breast cancer. She decided then that her mother’s death would not be in vain.

Using the metaphor of the Warrior Goddess, this book explains what Ayurveda, an ancient system of healing, describes as our “inner healing intelligence.” It also explores the various foods and supplements that enable women to prevent and successfully fight breast cancer, as they claim the healthy body that should be theirs. Dr. Horner has added a new chapter to the updated third edition of her award-winning book. In “The Spiritual Journey of Breast Cancer,” she describes why cancer is a wake-up call, a time-out in which women can turn inward to evaluate their lives with the intent to restore good health and learn how to receive, allow, trust, and surrender as they cultivate their relationship with their intuition and a higher power.

The final part of Waking the Warrior Goddess presents Dr. Horner’s Thirty-Step Program for reclaiming health and defeating breast cancer. In addition, this book includes an extensive, newly updated resources section for obtaining the particular nutrients and products that our bodies need to become and stay strong and healthy.  Click HERE to get more information.

Inspirational New Book Shares Stories And Lessons From Miracle Cancer Survivors

by Tami Boehmer  (Award winning author, blogger, and speaker)

Next month, it will be seven years since I learned I had metastatic (stage IV) breast cancer. It was my worst nightmares come true. I had just celebrated five cancer-free years after being diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. My daughter had just turned nine years old. My first thought was, “Will I be around to raise her?”

According to statistics and a couple of doctors I spoke with, it was highly unlikely. One told me I would “most certainly die of breast cancer.” No doubt about it. I responded, “I’m too stubborn to die”, then left determined to prove her wrong.

I recently read a quote on a metastatic breast cancer Facebook page: “Faith sees the invisible, believes in the incredible, and receives the impossible.” — Anonymous. My faith was shaky when I was first diagnosed, but there was a spark there waiting to be ignited.

I had spent my career in health care public relations, where I wrote success stories about patients who beat the odds of illnesses. I took a permanent leave of absence after being diagnosed this second time, but started feeling empty and depressed. I decided to use my experience and share stories of people who had beaten the odds of stage IV cancer.

When I started interviewing individuals for my first book, From Incurable to Incredible, I had only seven months under my belt as a stage IV breast cancer survivor. My primary goal was to inspire hope and show that it was possible to beat the odds of a terminal or incurable prognosis. Not just for my readers; but for me, as well.

In Nov. 2014, my second book, Miracle Survivors: Beating the Odds of Incurable Cancer, was released by Skyhorse Publishing. I share my story, along with 23 other cancer survivors from around the country. With many years under my belt as a survivor, I got to know more people who are thriving years beyond what anyone expected and have learned many lessons from my own “school of hard knocks.” The book reflects my new perspective, as well as those of others like Carole Kubrin, who has been living with stage IV, HER2-positive breast cancer since 1998, and Greg Cantwell, a stage IV glioblastoma multiforme (the most aggressive form of brain cancer) survivor since 2004.

to buy Miracle Survivors by Tami Boehmer from Amazon, click on the image above

The book also includes an introduction by best-selling author Bernie Siegel, MD, and forewords by miracle survivors ePatient Dave deBronkart (a stage IV renal cancer survivor since 2007), the best-known spokesman for the patient engagement movement, and award-winning blues vocalist Curtis Salgado (diagnosed with stage IV renal cancer in 2007), who was the inspiration for the movie, The Blues Brothers.

While I call the individuals in this book, “miracle survivors,” overcoming the odds wasn’t something that just happened to them. Each person took a very active role in overcoming their challenges by becoming advocates for themselves and others and never giving up.

There are no winners or losers or the right or wrong way to deal with cancer and other major life challenges. But I know from experience and from talking with hundreds of people living with cancer that how we live our life is a choice. As the recently departed ESPN commentator Stuart Scott said, “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live.” That’s what my work is all about.

Great Holiday Gifts for Cancer Patients

Are you looking to purchase a great holiday gift for a cancer patient? To give a gift that will be special and highly appreciated, we suggest buying a gift that is both thoughtful and useful.

Cancer treatments including most chemotherapy regimens and radiation can cause unpleasant and uncomfortable side effects. Great gifts can help reduce the severity of these side effects and help to improve the patient’s quality of life.  Even simple side effect solutions can have a big effect on quality of life.

Deluxe Chemo Gift Kit

Deluxe Chemotherapy Gift

We have created a list of possible side effects and product suggestions to help combat the uncomfortable symptoms. Giving a gift of comfort shows that you understand and empathize with the patients’ health challenges.

Click on any product name below for more information and details about the product.

NAUSEA

We recommend Queasy Drops which are helpful in three ways: 1) they help to reduce nausea and 2) they help keep a dry mouth hydrated 3) they have a pleasant taste. These make a great stocking stuffer.

Biobands are simple acupressure wrist bands which can be worn round the clock with no side effects. They also help reduce nausea, and are reasonably priced.

RADIATION SKIN CARE

For compromised skin including radiation reaction and radiation dermatitis, we suggest My Girls Skin Care Cream, which is calendula based and calming. It goes on the skin feeling creamy but not oily.

For burned and painful skin we recommend RADX Radiation Therapy which also has 2% lidocaine as an ingredient to help reduce pain.  CoolMagic gel sheets also offer incredible relief.

A personal products gift collection with excellent value is the DermaQOL 9 Piece Gift Kit which includes soap, lotions, therapy cream, shampoo, conditioner, lip balm, and more. The DermaQOL products contain no harsh ingredients (ie no parabens, or other harsh products).

For a calming spray, we suggest CV Skinlabs Rescue & Relief Spray or Atopalm Moisture Mist.

To help surgical scars heal consider CV Skinlabs Restorative Skin Balm.

DRY MOUTH

Many chemotherapy regimens, and radiation to the throat and neck often cause dry mouth.  MouthKote is a handy spray that can be carried in a purse or a briefcase to combat dry mouth. We suggest Oral Balance Gel to help with mouth sores.

CLOTHING

Interesting and creative head wraps or hats may be appreciated by patients experiencing hair loss. There are also special surgical gowns that have been designed for cancer patients with special closures and port holes.  You can read about Radiant Wraps by clicking here.

STRESS

Relaxation, meditation and breathing products can help reduce stress. We suggest the Breathe with Purpose CD.  There are also calming apps which can be downloaded onto your phone. These products can help the patient relax during chemo infusions, or help improve sleep.

THE UNKNOWN

Fear of the unknown can cause escalation and rumination which can increase stress. The book “When Cancer Hits” by Britta Aragon is a complete guide to navigating all the changes that a patient will experience between the doctor’s office and everyday living including how to best manage side effects, stress and home recovery, and how to sustain positive energy during treatment and beyond.

LACK OF EXERCISE

Gentle exercise is generally recommended for cancer patients. Carol Michaels has written a book called  “Exercises for Cancer Survivors” and also has two gentle exercise DVD’s which can be done in the comfort of your own home. Some cancer patients are under the impression that inactivity will decrease fatigue and speed recovery. However, exercising during and after cancer surgery and treatments is helpful for one’s physical and mental well-being. The book and DVD’s are valuable resources and can help guide patients.

POOR APPETITE

Chemotherapy can affect appetite and taste. While many well wishers think that sweets and candy will be appreciated, many oncologists recommend that sugary products should be avoided. Therefore if considering food, we suggest homemade broths and chicken soups, or organic fruit and vegetable gift baskets.

Lumpy Cards for Cancer Patients: Humor When It’s Least Appropriate

By Alexis Timmons, RN, Founder of Lumpy Cards

When I worked as an oncology nurse at Beverly HillsCancerCenter, administering chemotherapy daily to patients, many of suffering awful side effects, I noticed that the majority did not want sympathy. They wanted to be heard and understood, not pitied. I watched them open countless greeting cards, which said various things like: we are so sorry, get well soon, we are praying for you, and I watched their mood sink a little more. I’m sure they felt appreciated, thought of, but they most certainly didn’t feel better.

It may seem counterintuitive, but a funny greeting card can make a cancer patient’s day brighter than a sympathy card can. As the daughter of a cancer survivor, I know it can be hard to find the right things to say, because you’re as scared as they are. So I took notes on what lifted patients up, and set out to design cards expressing those types of sentiments. I was determined to put a smile on the faces of those afflicted by cancer, and so LumpyCards was born. If you don’t know what to say to your sister, dad, coworker, or best friend with cancer, order a LumpyCard, and it will be easy.

Lumpy Cards 1

Example of a Lumpy Card

I have created greeting cards for every occasion, from birthday cards, sarcastic get-well cards from the cat, to holiday cards, a survivor collection, treatment-day cards, and others all specific to cancer treatment.

Eventually I hope to be in big chain stores like Walgreens and Target, so that my cards will be available to the masses, and cancer patients all over the country can be uplifted. Until then, you can purchase the cards from my website:  www.LumpyCards.com  While my mom was going through her treatment I searched tirelessly for cancer-related cards to make her laugh. I didn’t want a card that beat around the bush either. I wanted a card that spoke directly to the issue —in a funny way. Until now, that just didn’t exist. Now that they’re here, I’m trying to spread the word: Just say “no” to sympathy! Instead, you can order a LumpyCard and make someone’s day.

Another goal of mine is to partner with more cancer research foundations to raise money for their causes. So far I’ve teamed up with Brides Against Breast Cancer as a vendor in their latest Pasadena Fundraiser, and I plan on sponsoring many more, in cancer walks, runs, and events for other organizations. Additionally, a portion of every LumpyCards purchase is contributed to cancer research.

So many cancer survivors have said they wish LumpyCards had been around when they were going through their treatment. It makes me so happy to hear them praise my cards. I feel proud to be making a difference in one of the hardest journeys, knowing that even though I don’t have the cure to cancer, at least I can make the journey a little lighter.

Alexis Timmons, RN

Founder of LumpyCards

“I’ve always been drawn to oncology, as I felt I could make the greatest difference there. I loved the connection I got to make with my patients, and it was so satisfying to support them through something so challenging. But everything changed when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Cancer became personal, and from then on, every patient reminded me of her. I tirelessly searched for ways to brighten her day, and ended up buying lots of blank cards, because most of the cards out there were depressing. I wanted to make her laugh. My goal now is to bring laughter to as many cancer patients as I can. Cancer doesn’t have to be scary all the time! “

The Breast Cancer Vaccine – Curing Cancer Through Prevention

by Vera Viner

Have you seen breast cancer try to take your life and those around you? Have you feared that your daughter, mother, wife, or sister may be diagnosed with this disease? Wouldn’t you do anything you could to prevent breast cancer from taking the lives of your loved ones?

As luck would have it, there might be something in the works right now that could potentially prevent breast cancer in 95 percent of cases. That’s right, 95 percent! Dr. Vincent Tuohy of the Cleveland Clinic and his team designed a breast cancer vaccine. The vaccine was found to prevent the disease in 100 percent of the mice tested.

Dr. Vincent Tuohy

Dr. Vincent Tuohy

The original research including animal models was published in the Nature Medicine journal in June 2010. Tuohy’s team from the Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute used the compound alpha-lactalbumin as the main property of the breast cancer vaccine. It was found to both prevent tumor formation AND slow down the growth of existing tumors.

Essentially, the study used a control group of mice that were injected with a vaccine without alpha-lactalbumin and an experimental group that was injected with a vaccine containing the relevant compound. All of the mice in the experimental group did not develop breast cancer despite the fact that both groups of mice were genetically predisposed to the disease. The mice in the control group did develop tumors.

“We believe that this vaccine will someday be used to prevent breast cancer in adult women in the same way that vaccines have prevented many childhood diseases,” Dr. Vincent Tuohy stated in a press release. “If it works in humans the way it works in mice, this will be monumental. We could eliminate breast cancer.”

The next steps in this research were clear: find the funding necessary to begin Phase I trials to determine whether the vaccine is safe to use in women. While it was definitely an uphill battle and many common revenue streams for this innovative research declined to help, Dr. Vincent Tuohy was able to gather enough funding to begin the next stage of clinical study at the end of 2013. While the Susan G. Komen Foundation and some other organizations refused funding, there were some smaller grassroots campaigns that helped push forward this research. For instance, Brakes for Breast Cancer, a nonprofit dependent on the proceedings from a handful of auto repair shops, presented Dr. Tuohy with a check for $32,848.84 in February of 2013.

Cleveland Clinic Innovations has created a spin-off company after securing all of the funding called Shield Biotech. The company will continue to improve upon the preventive breast cancer vaccine. Shield Biotech will be finishing preclinical development and seeking FDA permission to begin testing the vaccine as an investigational new drug in human clinical trials.

Phase I clinical trials are expected to begin within the next two years. It will take approximately three years to complete Phase I studies. The Phase IA trial will follow patients with triple-negative breast cancer who have undergone surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation treatment.

During this trial, the researchers will be determining the proper dosage and frequency of the vaccine necessary to ensure the highest immune response for preventing breast cancer development.

Phase IB trials will follow the reactions to the vaccine in healthy women who are at high risk for breast cancer and have chosen to undergo bilateral mastectomy to lower their risk. In this trial, the breast tissue specifically will be studied to determine how the vaccine affects the cancer-free cells.

These initial trials are meant to establish the safety of the vaccine and find the best immune response with regard to dosage. Patients will begin enrollment in the trial starting in 2015.

If you hope to help put a stop to breast cancer and ensure future generations of women do not need to suffer through this disease, please support Dr. Vincent Tuohy’s research on the first preventive breast cancer vaccine.
