How Do I Tell My Kids That Mommy Has Cancer?

by Megan Pomputius

How Do I Tell My Kids That Mommy Has Cancer? Still My Mommy book

There were many questions that raced through my mind when I was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer. One of the biggest questions, was how I was going to tell my 2-year-old daughter who was at my bedside in the hospital after my surgery. She didn’t even know what the word “cancer” meant. She saw that mommy had a big boo-boo and wanted to kiss it and make it better. Then as the doctors took care of me and she watched, she would practice on her baby dolls. Then as I lost my hair, she watched as I finally shaved all of it off. She knew something was different. I looked for other resources to help guide her through this, but never found anything I liked. As a mom diagnosed with cancer, you are faced with so many different decisions and choices that trying to find a good book for your child(ren) shouldn’t have to be one of them. After my diagnosis, a feeling in my heart just kept wanting to produce something to help other women going through this diagnosis in their lives. I finally decided that writing a children’s book was what I was meant to do. I wrote the story Still My Mommy that demonstrates the relationship between a mother and daughter before, during, and after the diagnosis to help moms explain that changes may happen but we are still the same amazing moms. It features beautiful illustrations by Andrea Alemanno who resides in Italy and was contracted through Mascot Books.

The story begins featuring the relationship between mom and daughter and all of the fun things that they do together; baking, playing outside, reading books.  Then it shows mom going to the hospital and getting a boo-boo and how the little girl takes care of her dolls just like the nurses did. It features them shopping for wigs together, mommy being tired some days, but at the end of the story, (still bald), she is still the same amazing mommy, no matter what the outcome of the disease.

After Scarlett (age 4) read the story with her mommy, it brought up a lot of questions as she asked, “what’s a wig”, ‘why doesn’t her mommy have any hair?” I want this to be a story that can create dialog for parents to speak with their kids about what this disease can do to people.  Joz (age 5) asked her mom to read the story, ‘three more times’ after reading it for the first time. My daughter (age 4) loves reading this story, but always tells me, ‘mommy, don’t make your hair like that again’.  Even though she doesn’t know the word ‘CANCER’ she still understands that it was a time in all our lives that we don’t want to relive.

The book was published by Mascot Books and is for sale at their website www.mascotbooks.com.  Books can also be purchased and autographed at Megan’s blog www.stillmymommy.weebly.com and is listed for $14.95.

About the author: Megan Pomputius lives in Pennsylvania and teaches 4th grade. Her daughter will be going into Kindergarten this year. Megan was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in June of 2013 and has been in remission following surgery and chemotherapy treatments.

A Unique Approach Using Food As Medicine To Decrease Side Effects of Cancer Treatment

Cooking Through Cancer Treatment To Recovery” by Dr. Lisa Price ND and Susan Gins, Certified Nutritionist, is a unique cookbook in many ways. Written for family and friends, as well as people going through cancer treatment, the focus is to use food to decrease the side effects of treatment. At the same time this approach improves the quality of life by making the patient feel better, hopefully using less prescription medicine for common side effects, lightening the load on the liver and empowering people to take an active, positive part in their lives.

Cooking From Cancer Treatment to Recovery

Recipe on cover: Artichoke, Bean, Hazelnut and Asparagus Salad

Here is a partial list of criteria we used and why we used it:

  1. All the recipes are hypoallergenic and do not contain gluten, dairy, processed sugar or soy.
  • Why?  Many people are sensitive or allergic and try to avoid these ingredients.  Not eliminating these foods? Then use the recipes and substitute what works for you!

2.    98% of the recipes are only four steps long.

  •  Why?  We did not want to add more stress to anyone’s life who was using the cookbook.  We kept it simple and flavorful. We included a shopping list guide to stock your pantry.

3.     All the recipes have Nutrition Facts information.

  • Why?  We want people to have a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates, fiber and good fat. In addition, people going through treatment may have other medical problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, irritable bowel, etc. With Nutrition Facts, it’s easy to see how the recipes fit into their Doctor’s diet recommendations.

4.     Each recipe is coded for symptoms and treatment phases.

  • Why? It’s easy to see for example, if you are going through chemo and you have fatigue or nausea, you can read on the each recipe if it’s good for these issues. There’s a symbol with a letter: P/S=Pretreatment & Surgery, R=Radiation; C=Chemo; H=Hormonal Therapy; R/P=Remission and Prevention.
  • In addition, Dr. Price has created a grid in the back of the book that lists all the treatment phases and the side effects and leads you to the recipes that are recommended for example, constipation, joint pain muscle aches, nausea during chemo. There are eight pages of this grid that cover every treatment phase and all the most documented side effects of treatment.
  • There are many recipes to choose from so you can pick one or many that appeal to you at the time.
  • Each recipe has a Health Tip 101 explaining certain nutrients and why they are important to you.

Delicious Recipe from the cookbook

Recipe pictured: Bibimpap

It is well documented in scientific journals that people who are able to stay healthy during treatment have better outcomes and are able to transition to their pre-treatment lives more easily. The particular nutrients-vitamins, minerals, bioflavonoids, good fats-included in each recipe have been studied to have positive effects decreasing the symptoms of cancer treatment. Using the recipes in our book will support you in remission and prevention.

Of Mice and Women: Investigating the Breast Cancer Virus

By Vera Gruessner

Dr. Kathleen Ruddy

Dr. Kathleen Ruddy

Have you heard about the breast cancer virus in mice? There is significant evidence that this virus is linked to human breast cancers. Dr. Kathleen T. Ruddy, a New Jersey-based breast cancer surgeon and Founder of the Breast Health and Healing Foundation, released her executive summary about her soon-to-be-published book “Of Mice and Women:  Unraveling the Mystery of the Breast Cancer Virus.” By June 2015, the book will be published and available in both print and digital formats. To learn more about the upcoming book, you can read the executive summary on the Breast Health and Healing website by clicking here.

In your free time, take a minute to download the executive summary (which is completely free) and share on your social networks! Let your close ones know about the innovative and intriguing book. Over the last eight years, Dr. Kathleen Ruddy wrote and revised this book and is now ready to finish publishing it in paper and electronic formats. Want to know the best part of it all? The digital version will be free to the public at large!

Of Mice and Women

Of Mice and Women (new book)

Did you know that 40 percent of human breast cancers have gene sequences that are analogous to a retrovirus known to cause breast cancer in mice? The retrovirus found in mice is called the mouse mammary tumor virus. Further research on the breast cancer virus is necessary to determine strategies that would prevent this serious medical condition. The researchers Drs. Pogo, Etkind, and Melena have spent decades studying the Pink Virus and its role in human breast cancer.

If we can prove that a virus causes up to 40 percent of human breast cancers, the scientific community can work toward creating a vaccine that would prevent this disease in men and women around the world. This would be an amazing opportunity to eradicate the disease once and for all!

Does the human mammary tumor virus cause breast cancer in women? If so, we need to develop vaccines that can prevent the disease.

Any and all donations that the Breast Health and Healing Foundation gains from the release of the executive summary and the book will be put toward funding the full-length documentary film, “A Pox On Us,” co-produced with Soap Box Media. The profits from the film will be used to directly fund research on the breast cancer virus.

We hope the executive summary and the book will spread like wildfire through the breast cancer community. To achieve this goal, we need your help! Please share it on Facebook. Share it on Twitter. Share it on Google+. Share it on LinkedIn. Let your friends and family know about this revolutionary work!

Books for Cancer Patients: Inspiration, Meditation and Exercise

by Margot Malin

We got such positive feedback from our prior blog post, in which we highlighted books that are helpful for cancer patients who were just diagnosed, going through treatment and seeking to improve their diets that we were inspired to create an update. Click HERE to access our original post “Helpful Books for Cancer Patients – Just Diagnosed, Going Through Treatment and Nutrition and Diet Suggestions“.

In today’s blog post we suggest books for exercise during and after cancer treatment and books to help inspiration, calming and healing.  These books can empower the reader with knowledge and inspiration.

EXERCISE

Exercises for Cancer Survivors – Stretching and Strength Training, By Carol Michaels

According to Carol Michaels, MBA, ACSM, ACE:  “Exercise is an important component of a cancer survivor’s recovery process. Emerging research suggests a decrease in breast cancer recurrence for those who exercise. A well-designed program can also decrease side effects and improve quality of life. Moreover, acceptance of exercise as part of a good recuperation and standard of care has been gaining momentum in the medical community.  Cancer patients should begin an exercise program designed to ameliorate the adverse effects of surgery and help them regain their pre-cancer fitness level. Exercise that focuses on functional fitness will help them be able to perform the activities of daily living and return to the activities that they enjoy.”

This book educates patients about the importance of exercise in their treatment regimen. A more complete description of her book is available in this blog post: “Exercises for Cancer  Survivors – A New Book”.  Among other things, in this book patients will learn: Which exercises should I be doing and which should I avoid? Can I exercise during chemotherapy? Can I exercise if I have lymphedema? How do I exercise safely with osteoporosis? Some cancer patients will need to exercise under supervision while others will be able to exercise independently. This book isan essential guide for those who prefer or need to exercise independently.  Click HERE for more information.

YOGA

Restorative Yoga For Breast Cancer Recovery by Diana Ross, ERYT 500, Breast Cancer Survivor

This is an unique restorative yoga therapy book which focuses on breast health, lymphedema management and breast cancer recovery. The breath is also introduced with each flowing pose so that the mind as well as the muscles “let go” and relax allowing for the healing to begin and then to grow. Yoga poses are done either in a relaxed, reclined, seated, twisting and standing position. Restorative Yoga For Breast Cancer Recovery is a great beginning to build a practice for strength and flexibility, as well as aiding in lymphedema management. This book outlines a variety of easy to learn restorative yoga poses which can emotionally and physically improve the recovery process from breast cancer surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy treatments. It is also invaluable in maintaining breast health, reducing cancer related fatigue (CRF), and managing lymphedema. If you or a loved one has been recently diagnosed, is in treatment or in recovery, this yoga is the perfect place to start. Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds by Dr. Kelly Turner

While getting her Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkley, Dr. Turner, a researcher, lecturer, and counselor in integrative oncology, was shocked to discover that no one was studying episodes of radical (or unexpected) remission—when people recover against all odds without the help of conventional medicine, or after conventional medicine has failed.  She was so fascinated by this kind of remission that she embarked on a ten month trip around the world, traveling to ten different countries to interview fifty holistic healers and twenty radical remission cancer survivors about their healing practices and techniques. Her research continued by interviewing over 100 Radical Remission survivors and studying over 1000 of these cases.  Her evidence presents nine common themes that she believes may help even terminal patients turn their lives around.

Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds has been highly recommended by numerous integrative medicine practitioners, cancer patients, cancer coaches  on blogs and on Linkedin posts.  Click HERE for more information.

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and Jeff Zaslow

A lot of professors give talks titled “The Last Lecture.” Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can’t help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn’t have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave–“Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”–wasn’t about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because “time is all you have…and you may find one day that you have less than you think”). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.  For more information about this book click HERE.  To view The Last Lecture “Randy Pausch:  Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” on YouTube click HERE.

From Incurable to Incredible, Cancer Survivors Who Beat The Odds and Miracle Survivors: Beating The Odds of Incurable Cancer, both books by Tami Bohemer

From Incurable to Incredible features 27 stories of cancer survivors who shocked everyone by overcoming a terminal prognosis. You’ll learn about Dave Massey, who in 1986 and again in 1997, was given six months to live. Today, he runs marathons and speaks at cancer centers nationwide to spread his message of hope. Paul Falk, diagnosed 23 years ago at age 9 with acute leukemia, describes how his doctors wondered if he would survive two weeks. A year later, he wowed everyone by becoming the personal guest of then Vice President George H.W. Bush. And then there’s Mary Jacobson who, after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, bought a coffin and made arrangements for her young daughter. Fifteen years later, she competes in Strong Woman competitions and pulls planes, trains and automobiles for charity.

If you have received an incurable cancer diagnosis, hearing about someone “who made it” is like spotting a rescue ship when you’re drowning in a stormy sea. Miracle Survivors provides that lifeline with a collection of stories of cancer survivors who were given a terminal diagnosis but shocked everyone by thriving years past their prognoses. These “miracle survivors” have different cancers and circumstances, but share a poor prognosis and incredible drive to overcome it.

Miracle Survivors will help answer the question: What sets people apart who beat the odds of a terminal or incurable prognosis? Overcoming the odds wasn’t something that just happened to those who share their stories. Each person took a very active role in overcoming their challenges, whether it was activating their faith or transforming their lifestyle. Rather than passively accepting their circumstances, they decided to transform them.

This extremely accessible book is that expert partner, offering a combination of crucial medical education clearly and comfortably explained along with personal guidance gleaned from real patient experiences. Waking the Warrior Goddess, Third Edition: Dr. Christine Horner’s Program to Protect Against & Fight Breast Cancer,  by Christine Horner, MD

Breast cancer has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Once a relatively rare disease, it now affects 2 to 3 million American women. What can we do to protect ourselves? Christine Horner, M.D., has the prescription: Eat healthy foods, add a good dose of certain supplements, get the rest and exercise we need, and avoid things that are bad for our bodies. We each have a Warrior Goddess in us, and it’s time to set her free.

A pioneer who pushed through federal and state legislation ensuring that breast reconstruction after a mastectomy would be paid for by insurance companies, Dr. Horner lost her own mother to breast cancer. She decided then that her mother’s death would not be in vain.

Using the metaphor of the Warrior Goddess, this book explains what Ayurveda, an ancient system of healing, describes as our “inner healing intelligence.” It also explores the various foods and supplements that enable women to prevent and successfully fight breast cancer, as they claim the healthy body that should be theirs. Dr. Horner has added a new chapter to the updated third edition of her award-winning book. In “The Spiritual Journey of Breast Cancer,” she describes why cancer is a wake-up call, a time-out in which women can turn inward to evaluate their lives with the intent to restore good health and learn how to receive, allow, trust, and surrender as they cultivate their relationship with their intuition and a higher power.

The final part of Waking the Warrior Goddess presents Dr. Horner’s Thirty-Step Program for reclaiming health and defeating breast cancer. In addition, this book includes an extensive, newly updated resources section for obtaining the particular nutrients and products that our bodies need to become and stay strong and healthy.  Click HERE to get more information.

Inspirational New Book Shares Stories And Lessons From Miracle Cancer Survivors

by Tami Boehmer  (Award winning author, blogger, and speaker)

Next month, it will be seven years since I learned I had metastatic (stage IV) breast cancer. It was my worst nightmares come true. I had just celebrated five cancer-free years after being diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. My daughter had just turned nine years old. My first thought was, “Will I be around to raise her?”

According to statistics and a couple of doctors I spoke with, it was highly unlikely. One told me I would “most certainly die of breast cancer.” No doubt about it. I responded, “I’m too stubborn to die”, then left determined to prove her wrong.

I recently read a quote on a metastatic breast cancer Facebook page: “Faith sees the invisible, believes in the incredible, and receives the impossible.” — Anonymous. My faith was shaky when I was first diagnosed, but there was a spark there waiting to be ignited.

I had spent my career in health care public relations, where I wrote success stories about patients who beat the odds of illnesses. I took a permanent leave of absence after being diagnosed this second time, but started feeling empty and depressed. I decided to use my experience and share stories of people who had beaten the odds of stage IV cancer.

When I started interviewing individuals for my first book, From Incurable to Incredible, I had only seven months under my belt as a stage IV breast cancer survivor. My primary goal was to inspire hope and show that it was possible to beat the odds of a terminal or incurable prognosis. Not just for my readers; but for me, as well.

In Nov. 2014, my second book, Miracle Survivors: Beating the Odds of Incurable Cancer, was released by Skyhorse Publishing. I share my story, along with 23 other cancer survivors from around the country. With many years under my belt as a survivor, I got to know more people who are thriving years beyond what anyone expected and have learned many lessons from my own “school of hard knocks.” The book reflects my new perspective, as well as those of others like Carole Kubrin, who has been living with stage IV, HER2-positive breast cancer since 1998, and Greg Cantwell, a stage IV glioblastoma multiforme (the most aggressive form of brain cancer) survivor since 2004.

to buy Miracle Survivors by Tami Boehmer from Amazon, click on the image above

The book also includes an introduction by best-selling author Bernie Siegel, MD, and forewords by miracle survivors ePatient Dave deBronkart (a stage IV renal cancer survivor since 2007), the best-known spokesman for the patient engagement movement, and award-winning blues vocalist Curtis Salgado (diagnosed with stage IV renal cancer in 2007), who was the inspiration for the movie, The Blues Brothers.

While I call the individuals in this book, “miracle survivors,” overcoming the odds wasn’t something that just happened to them. Each person took a very active role in overcoming their challenges by becoming advocates for themselves and others and never giving up.

There are no winners or losers or the right or wrong way to deal with cancer and other major life challenges. But I know from experience and from talking with hundreds of people living with cancer that how we live our life is a choice. As the recently departed ESPN commentator Stuart Scott said, “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live.” That’s what my work is all about.

Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book has long been the bible for the newly diagnosed. In this completely revised fifth edition, it also becomes a guide for those at risk of getting breast cancer, survivors interested in the consequences of their treatment, and anyone who wants to understand the new research about how the local environment influences the manifestations and treatments of many different kinds of breast cancer. Major advances being made in genetic research today mean that prevention and treatment can work not only to get rid of mutated cells (through chemo or surgery), but also to change the environment around the cells (through hormone therapy, exercise, and stress reduction). Among other promising developments discussed are advances in imaging, recognition of breast density as a risk factor, and a section focused on “personalized medicine” to help determine what kind of cancer you have and how best to treat it.  Any woman facing a diagnosis, decisions about treatment, or concerns about prevention will find in Dr. Love’s book the information, guidance, and reassurance she needs.

This book has been written for both patients and caregivers and addresses the unique requirements of a patient undergoing cancer treatment.  A patient’s waxing and waning appetite and ability to maintain optimal nutritional requirements are severely challenged during treatment, so the book provides integral information on how to deal with these challenges. From managing the side effects of treatment with particular foods and nutrients, to make-ahead meals that can be frozen and reheated at a moment’s notice, to foods that are simply more palatable to a patient depending on what stage of treatment they’re in.

ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS FROM ELYN JACOBS, CANCER COACH

Elyn says “In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and because I strive to spread the word that there are many options, but no one magic bullet for cancer, I would like to share some books that will empower you to be an active participant in your healing.  No one treatment is right for all, and there are options well beyond what we are hearing from our doctors. ” Elyn’s suggestions can be found in her blog post entitled “Recommended Reading List for People With Breast Cancer” – please click HERE to access her suggestions.
